Dr. Milanovski dental clinic in Skopje

Since 2015, our aim has been simple: to keep your natural teeth whenever that is reasonable. On this page, you can read what a visit involves, which materials we use, what our contract with the Health Insurance Fund (FZO) means and where to find us.

The Dr. Milanovski dental clinic in Skopje, North Macedonia, is a private healthcare institution (PZU) based in the Aerodrom district. It has been open since 2015, is registered as a general dental practice and has a contract with the Health Insurance Fund (FZO).

Dr. Milanovski dental clinic in Skopje: open since 2015

PZU Dr. Milanovski was registered on 2 October 2015 and has held a contract with the Fund for primary dental care since December that year.

The practice is named after the dentist Dr Kiril Milanovski. Its aim has not changed since it opened: modern dentistry in which saving your own natural teeth comes first.

We share some of our work, such as white fillings, composite veneers, root canal treatment and crowns, on Instagram and Facebook.

‘Save the tooth’: your natural tooth comes first

‘Save the tooth’ has been the practice’s motto since it opened. Before anyone mentions extraction, we check whether your tooth can be kept and whether that makes sense for you.

This is in line with what the FDI World Dental Federation recommends for minimal intervention dentistry: find decay early and stop it progressing, remove as little healthy tooth tissue as possible and, where feasible, repair a damaged filling rather than replace it.

In practice, this means:

  • Repair before replacement. An old filling with a small defect can sometimes simply be repaired. Find out when a filling really needs replacing.
  • Root canal treatment before extraction. A tooth with an inflamed or infected nerve (the pulp) can often be saved with root canal treatment. If the problem comes back, the canals can sometimes be treated again (retreatment).
  • A post and crown. A badly broken, root-treated tooth can sometimes be built up with a post and protected with a crown, also known as a cap.
  • Honesty when a tooth cannot be saved. If a tooth is too badly damaged, is cracked deep below the gum line or has little chance of successful treatment, we will tell you openly and look at the other options with you.

After an extraction, the gap is often filled with a bridge, an implant or a denture, which usually means more visits and higher costs than keeping the tooth (AAE).

A saved tooth still needs looking after. A review of studies found that 86 to 93 out of every 100 root-treated teeth were still in the mouth 2 to 10 years after treatment. Much depends on the final filling or crown, oral hygiene and check-ups.

What to expect when you visit us

Many people put off going to the dentist for years, out of fear or after a bad experience. If you have not been for a long time, you are not alone.

Whether you come in for a scale and polish (teeth cleaning), a filling, or because a tooth or wisdom tooth is hurting, your visit starts with a conversation. You tell us what is bothering you, which medicines you take and what you would like to achieve.

Then comes the examination. Before any procedure, we explain what we see, what your options are and what happens next. Questions are always welcome.

When needed, a local anaesthetic numbs only the area being treated. If you still feel anything, please tell us. We can also agree a signal for a break, such as raising your hand.

After the examination, and before any larger treatment, you receive a written plan setting out your options and the price. The decision is yours, to make in your own time and without pressure.

To find out what to bring and how to prepare, see Your first visit.

The materials we use

For white (composite) fillings and composite veneers, we use 3M ESPE Filtek Z550, a tooth-coloured nano-hybrid composite with very fine filler particles. The shade is matched to your teeth, and an adhesive bonds the material to the tooth.

This means that when the damage is small, more of the healthy tooth can often be kept. How long a filling lasts depends on its size, your bite, oral hygiene and check-ups. Many fillings last 10 years or more, but not all do (ADA).

A badly damaged, root-treated tooth can be built up with a titanium post and covered with a metal-ceramic (porcelain fused to metal) crown. After the examination, we will explain whether this is suitable for you.

Ask us which material we plan to use in your case, and why.

Hygiene and sterilisation in a dental practice

Clean, sterile instruments are the foundation of a safe dental visit. International guidance, for example from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Dental Association, sets out these basic rules:

  • Reusable instruments are cleaned and then sterilised before the next patient, most often with steam under pressure.
  • The steriliser is checked regularly with special indicators and tests.
  • Needles and other single-use items are used only once.
  • Gloves and masks are changed for every patient, and hands are washed or disinfected before and after each patient.
  • The chair, the light and other surfaces touched during treatment are disinfected after each patient, or covered with a protective film that is changed each time.

Questions about hygiene or how instruments are prepared? Please ask us.

Location and accessibility

We are at Bul. Jane Sandanski 96 in the Aerodrom district of Skopje, near the Biser shopping centre and opposite the Mining Institute. We are open Monday to Friday, 11:00–19:00, by appointment.

According to our Google profile, the seating and the toilet are wheelchair accessible. If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, please call ahead so that we can plan your visit together.

The practice closes for annual leave for part of the summer. We announce the dates on Facebook and Instagram, with details of which dentist to contact if your problem cannot wait. Visiting Skopje? Check the dates before you travel. For a map and directions, see our Contact page.

Our contract with the Fund

Since December 2015, the practice has had a contract for primary dental care with FZO, North Macedonia’s public health insurer. If you are insured with the Fund, you can register with Dr Kiril Milanovski as your chosen dentist (izbran stomatolog).

When you book, ask us which services the Fund covers and whether there is a co-payment. Services the Fund does not cover are paid for privately, and your written plan shows the price in advance.

Our Prices page explains how the cost of private treatment is worked out.

Your dentist: Dr Kiril Milanovski

Dr Kiril Milanovski is a dentist. On Instagram, he describes himself as an ‘Esthetic & Cosmetic Dentist’, meaning he has a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry. The practice itself is registered as a general dental practice.

The cases he shares include white fillings, composite veneers, root canal treatment, crowns and teeth whitening. Even with cosmetic treatment, the first question is how to keep your teeth healthy.

Questions about the practice

Who is Dr Kiril Milanovski?

Dr Kiril Milanovski is the dentist after whom the practice is named. The practice’s motto, ‘Save the tooth’, means first checking whether your natural tooth can be kept. You can read more on his profile.

Where is the Dr. Milanovski dental clinic in Skopje?

The practice is at Bul. Jane Sandanski 96 in the Aerodrom district of Skopje, near the Biser shopping centre. We are open Monday to Friday, 11:00–19:00, by appointment. There is a map on our Contact page.

What materials and equipment do you use, and how are instruments sterilised?

For white fillings and composite veneers, we use 3M ESPE Filtek Z550, a nano-hybrid composite. International guidance says that in a dental practice, instruments should be cleaned and sterilised before the next patient, and single-use items should not be reused. You are welcome to ask about our equipment and protocol at your visit.

Is the practice private (a PZU)?

Yes. PZU is the Macedonian abbreviation for ‘private healthcare institution’, so this is a private dental practice in Skopje. It also has a contract with FZO, which means people insured with the Fund can register with Dr Kiril Milanovski as their chosen dentist. Treatment the Fund does not cover is paid for privately.

Can every tooth be saved?

Not always. A tooth usually cannot be kept if decay has destroyed too much of it, if it is cracked deep below the gum line or if there is not enough bone around it (AAE). In that case, we explain the other options openly, including extraction and ways to replace the tooth.
